Applied Structure Optimization

Structure optimization supports the concept engineer as well as the computational engineer, by providing mathematical algoriothms for finding better or even optimal designs. Since it is possible to develop optimization methods even for complex and interdisciplinary tasks, the structure optimization has become a powerful tool in the construction and designing process.

Subject of this lecture is to impart the necessary fundamental knowledge for efficient usage of optimization methods within the designing process of technical components.

From the content

  • Intention of strucutral optimization, motivation
  • Mathematical basics, convexity, Kuhn Tucker conditions
  • Optimization methods, gradient based approaches, approximation methods, evolutionary algorithms
  • Optimization strategies, multi target optimization, multidisciplinary optimization, multi-level optimization
  • Incorporation of finite element methods in optimization process
